Mozilla acquires fake reviews identification startup, Fakespot

Today, Mozilla revealed that it had acquired a firm called Fakespot, which provides a website and browser plugin to assist consumers spot fraudulent or questionable ratings.

Mozilla Chief Product Officer Steve Teixeira confirmed the acquisition in a blog post on Tuesday. 

To assist customers in making more educated decisions regarding their purchases, Fakespot claims it assigns a grade or rating to each review of the product.

According to the blogpost, Fakespot’s offerings can be used to spot fake reviews listed on various online marketplaces including Amazon, Yelp, TripAdvisor and more.

“Fakespot will continue to work across all major web browsers and mobile devices, and the Mozilla team will be investing in continuing to enhance the Fakespot experience for its many, dedicated users,” said Steve.

Fakespot, a New York-based company founded in 2016, employs an AI and machine learning system to identify patterns and resemblances in reviews and flag those that are most likely to be false.
