Legacy of Leadership and Harmony Honoring the Late Emir of Kano

Kwankwaso pays tribute to the late Emir of Kano: Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has expressed heartfelt reverence for the late Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, who passed away in June 2014. Remembering the revered monarch nine years after his demise, Kwankwaso took to his Twitter handle to describe the late Emir as an unwavering guardian to all the people of Kano. He emphasized the enduring legacy left behind by the late Emir, vowing to protect it.

 

A life dedicated to public service and peace-building: Before ascending the throne, Alhaji Ado Bayero had a diverse professional background, having worked as a banker, police officer, parliamentarian, diplomat, and successful businessman. His reign as the Emir of Kano spanned 50 years, during which he earned immense respect and influence. Known for his efforts to promote peace, he skillfully navigated Kano’s communal tensions and played a pivotal role in calming conflicts between the Hausa-speaking Muslim majority and Christian Igbo businessmen in the city.

 

Durbar celebrations and cultural heritage: The late Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, dedicated significant time and effort to the promotion of Kano’s durbar, the grand festivities held during Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. Under his guidance, the durbar grew to become the largest in Nigeria and a major tourist attraction. During these celebrations, the Emir would ride a horse, accompanied by a cavalry donning vibrant traditional robes. The sight of the Emir and the subsequent homage paid by Kano residents became cherished traditions, reflecting the cultural richness of the region.
