Nigerian Electricity Sector Criticized as One of the Worst in the World

Criticism of Electricity Sector

Prof. Yinka Omorogbe (SAN), President of the Nigerian Association for Energy Economics (NAEE), has described the electricity sector in Nigeria as one of the worst in the world. He emphasized that the current daily generation and distribution of 4,000 MW of electricity in Nigeria is insufficient and barely enough to power Lagos alone. Omorogbe highlighted the need for a holistic approach to address the country’s power challenges and eliminate the perception of electricity as an elite product.

NAEE/IAEE Annual International Conference

The NAEE is organizing its 16th NAEE/IAEE Annual International Conference, themed “Energy Evolution, Transition and Reform: Prospects for African Economies.” The conference, to be held from 9-11 July, will be chaired by Mr Gbenga Komolafe, Chief Executive of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), and opened by Prof. Jean-Michael Glachant, President of the International Association for Energy Economics (IAEE). Distinguished speakers, including Dr Omar Ibrahim, Secretary General of the African Petroleum Producers Organisation (APPO), and Dr. Bello Gusau, Executive Secretary of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), will contribute to the event.

Need for Improved Power Infrastructure

Prof. Omorogbe emphasized the urgent need to improve Nigeria’s grid system and establish mini-grids and stand-alone isolated renewable solutions. She stressed the necessity of reliable and sufficient electricity supply for all sectors, including industries. The current situation, with widespread reliance on personal generators, is deemed inadequate. Furthermore, she discussed the recent removal of fuel subsidies, stating that while it was a necessary step, measures should be taken to alleviate the impact on Nigerians and ensure fair supply practices in the region.
