Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo Appointed Global Advisor for Clean Energy Deployment

Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) has appointed Nigeria’s former Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), as its global advisor to support the organization’s mission of accelerating the deployment of clean energy in developing countries.

In a statement released on Tuesday, GEAPP highlighted that Osinbajo will assist in partnering with governments to enhance the enabling environment and improve the delivery effectiveness, aiming to attract greater capital flows into the clean energy sector.

The alliance, which consists of philanthropic organizations, governments, and technology, policy, and financing partners, seeks to enable emerging economies to transition to a clean energy model that promotes universal energy access, inclusive economic growth, and helps achieve critical climate goals over the next decade.

GEAPP’s objectives include reducing 4 gigatons of future carbon emissions, providing clean energy access to one billion people, and creating 150 million new jobs in collaboration with the IKEA Foundation, The Rockefeller Foundation, and Bezos Earth Fund.

Furthermore, GEAPP recognized Osinbajo’s appointment as the lead for the Commonwealth general election observers in Sierra Leone in May. Prior to joining GEAPP, Osinbajo served as Vice President of Nigeria for eight years and held positions such as Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice for Lagos State.

As an accomplished lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Osinbajo has initiated various people-centered programs addressing access to justice, energy access, and social investments during his time in public service. With his expertise and extensive network, Osinbajo will play a pivotal role in GEAPP’s mission to support governments and communities across Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean in transitioning to clean energy systems that drive economic growth and help meet climate goals.

Expressing his gratitude for the appointment, Osinbajo emphasized the alignment between GEAPP’s vision and the aspirations of emerging economies seeking greener futures. He expressed his commitment to working towards universal energy access and climate change action while setting ambitious goals to transform lives.

Simon Harford, Chief Executive of GEAPP, described Osinbajo as a role model for public service and expressed confidence in his ability to leverage his expertise, global network, and relationships to advance GEAPP’s mission. Osinbajo’s role as global advisor for GEAPP is effective immediately.
