As part of the continuous rebranding of the social network, Elon Musk has taken control of the @x Twitter account without compensating its owner.
The “@x” username on the social network was previously used by San Francisco photographer Gene X Hwang until Tuesday night, when it was switched to the official account for X, Elon Musk’s new name for Twitter.
Mr. Hwang claimed that he had been open to selling the @x account, which was set up in 2007, but that he had only learned about the takeover by the business via email on Tuesday.
Since the redesign on Monday, which has divided users, the @X account has not posted anything.
Since acquiring Twitter for $44 billion (£38 billion) in October of last year, Musk has already introduced a number of significant changes, such as paid verification and reading limitations. He has also long hinted at reimagining Twitter as a “everything app” dubbed X.
He defended the decision by claiming that the platform’s growth has rendered the old moniker “inappropriate.”
Musk wrote on Twitter: “The Twitter name made sense when it was just 140 character messages going back and forth – like birds tweeting – but now you can post almost anything, including several hours of video.” Musk wants to call tweets “x’s” from now on.
