Breach of Appropriation Act
Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) accuses President Bola Tinubu of violating the appropriation act by removing petrol subsidy during his inaugural speech, without recourse to the National Assembly. The subsidy was expected to run until the end of June, making the act an impeachable offense.
Failed Promises and Negotiations
After the government removed the subsidy and raised pump prices, the NLC planned to protest, but negotiations were initiated by the government. However, the NLC states that the government acted in bad faith, breached their promises, and obtained a restraining order to stop the protest.
Concerns Over Economic Policies
The NLC criticizes the government’s decision to allow the naira to float in the market, increasing Nigeria’s debt stock. They express concerns about the management of the national currency and raise questions about the adequacy of financial support provided to struggling families compared to budget allocations for the national assembly and judiciary.
