A member of the House of Representatives and a loyalist of PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, Chinyere Igwe, has been arrested by police operatives during a stop and search operation in Rivers State.

The lawmaker, who is also a top member of PDP’s presidential campaign council in Rivers, was found with $498,100 concealed in a bag in his car, along with a list of how the money was to be distributed. The police have confirmed the arrest and have ordered his swift interrogation and arraignment in court. Igwe is accused of attempting to bribe INEC officials, security operatives, and buy votes for Atiku in Rivers State.

The incident comes just days after Igwe’s broadcasting outfits were allegedly attacked, which raises concerns about the ongoing political tensions in the area.

The police urge all contestants and political parties to comply strictly with provisions of the Electoral Act and other relevant laws, while members of the public are encouraged to report any observation they believe has the potential to lead to crime or break down of law and order.
