Investigation Commences
The Department of State Services (DSS) has launched an investigation into the recent clash with officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) at the premises of the Federal High Court in Lagos, which occurred during an attempt to re-arrest the suspended CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, just hours after he was granted bail.
Apology and Criticism
The DSS has apologized to the judiciary, acknowledging the unfortunate incident as a “sacrilege at the temple of justice.” However, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) condemned the clash, expressing concern over the brazen disrespect for the judicial process and sanctity of the court premises.
Calls for Sanctions and Reforms
Human rights lawyer Femi Falana called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to sanction the DSS officials involved in the “show of shame.” Legal experts and rights groups, including Lawyers in Defence of Democracy and the African Centre for Justice and Human Rights, criticized the conduct of the DSS, calling for disciplinary measures and a complete overhaul of the institutions to ensure professionalism and respect for the rule of law.
