Deputy Chief Raymond M. Downey had an extraordinary career with the New York City Fire Department. After proudly serving with the U.S. Marine Corps, Chief Downey joined the FDNY in 1962, dedicating his life to protecting and serving the city he loved.
Throughout his 39-year career, Deputy Chief Raymond M. Downey demonstrated immense valor and leadership, earning the respect and admiration of his fellow firefighters and the community. His unwavering bravery in the face of danger resulted in five individual medals for valor, recognizing his exceptional acts of courage. Furthermore, he was also honored with 16 unit citations, highlighting his role in leading his team to extraordinary achievements.

Deputy Chief Raymond M. Downey earned the esteemed monikers of “The Master of Disaster” and “God” for his exceptional expertise, strategic thinking, and unwavering commitment to his duties. His unmatched skills and leadership qualities made him instrumental in navigating the most challenging emergency situations.
