Fuel Prices Surge to Record High of N617 per Litre

In a disheartening turn of events, the citizens of Abuja are grappling with the impact of soaring fuel prices, as the cost of petrol has surged to an unprecedented N617 per litre. This development comes after a recent removal of fuel subsidies, which has left motorists and commuters facing mounting financial hardships. A visit to various NNPC filling stations along the Kubwa expressway and Utako in Abuja confirmed the alarming price increase, leaving many questioning the government’s policies and the toll it’s taking on the everyday lives of Nigerians.

Fuel Prices Reach a New High

Published on July 18, 2023, the Daily Post reported that the price of petrol has skyrocketed to approximately N617 per litre, sending shockwaves through Abuja’s residents. Initially standing at N539, the staggering jump has left citizens reeling from the sudden and significant financial burden. As the news spread like wildfire, motorists and commuters hurriedly flocked to petrol stations, desperately hoping to fill up their tanks before further price hikes.

Interview with IPMAN’s National President

Elder Chinedu Okoronkwo, the National President of the Independent Petroleum Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), confirmed the distressing development. In an interview with the Daily Post, he acknowledged that the recent surge is a direct consequence of the government’s decision to remove fuel subsidies. He further explained that fuel prices would remain subject to fluctuation, dictated by market forces and the changes in the foreign exchange market’s dollar value. The removal of subsidies has exposed consumers to the harsh reality of market-driven fuel prices, leaving them vulnerable to unpredictable price spikes.

Impact on Ordinary Citizens

As citizens try to cope with the increasing fuel prices, their frustrations have reached a boiling point. Many blame the current administration’s policies for exacerbating their hardships. Uchenna Matthew, one of the affected motorists, voiced his anguish, stating that the government is leading Nigerians into a state of despair. Expressing discontent with the current administration, he expressed hope for the return of the “original government that won the election.”
