IBEDC Announces Prepaid Meter Upgrade for Seamless Operation

The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) has announced the upcoming upgrade of its Standard Transfer Specification (STS) prepaid meters to enhance efficiency and align with global standards. The upgrade, known as Token Identification Rollover (TID), will take effect from August 1, 2023, and aims to ensure the seamless operation of prepaid meters while maintaining customer satisfaction.

The TID Rollover Upgrade

The TID Rollover upgrade involves integrating a global software update into STS meters, making them compatible with the new protocol. The upgrade is imperative as all STS meters worldwide will only accept old credit tokens with the necessary meter upgrade starting from November 24, 2024.

Key Change Tokens

To facilitate a smooth transition, IBEDC will provide its prepaid meter customers with Key Change Tokens (KCT) alongside their regular energy tokens when purchasing electricity. The KCT serves as a special ‘reset’ token and is crucial for completing the meter upgrade process. Customers can obtain the KCT free of charge, and upgrading their meters will not impact the current electricity tariff.

Upgrade Details

During the upgrade period, customers must ensure unused or previously purchased energy tokens are loaded into their meters before August 1, 2023. The meter upgrade is a one-time process, and subsequent energy token purchases will continue as usual after the upgrade has been completed. The upgrade process will not affect the credit unit balance on the meter.
