In a landmark judgment delivered on Tuesday, the Supreme Court of Nigeria dismissed the appeal filed by Adegboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress (APC) challenging the election of Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the Governor of Osun State.

Appeal Court’s Judgement Upheld

The apex court upheld the decision of the Appeal Court, which had earlier upheld Adeleke’s election victory as the Governor of Osun State. Justice Emmanuel Agim read the judgment on behalf of the five-member panel of justices, which held that Oyetola failed to provide sufficient evidence to support his claim of over-voting during the July 16, 2022, governorship election.

Appeal Lacks Merit

The Supreme Court panel unanimously agreed that the appeal lacked merit, thereby dismissing the appeal and affirming the election of Ademola Adeleke as the duly elected Governor of Osun State.

What’s Next?

As the dust settles on this ruling, it remains to be seen what the political implications of the judgment will be in Osun State and the wider political landscape of Nigeria. However, for now, Adeleke’s election has been validated by the Supreme Court, and he remains the Governor of Osun State.
