A lot of cost pages tell a renter to replace a water heater. The installed price is identical whether you rent or own. What you are allowed to do is not. If you rent, you can usually choose a window air conditioner, a move, and whether the circuit you were given can hold a heater. A panel, a tank, and a condenser on a pad belong to the owner.
## Use the number to read someone else’s quote
If a landlord says a water heater is an eight-thousand-dollar emergency, the city page is how you ask a better question. Compare their quote with the high number for a straightforward swap. It is not a reason to hire a plumber quietly and put the lease at risk.
## Owners still do not get one price
Owners get a band, a local labor rate, and a short list of what pushes a job into the high column. An optional note under the result does not change the number. A contractor does not get to buy a lower one.
