Why a 1 MB target can be useful

Forms, profile systems, job applications, marketplaces and some publishing workflows impose file-size limits. Starting from the stated limit gives you a clear stopping point. It is usually sensible to leave a little headroom when the destination rejects files at or above the published maximum.

What determines the final size

Image dimensions, content complexity, source format, encoder behavior and selected quality all affect the result. A noisy photograph and a flat graphic can behave very differently even at the same dimensions.

When 1 MB is too small

In that case, use the lowest size the destination really requires and accept a slightly larger file when the rules allow it.

Always keep the source image outside the target workflow. A target-size copy is a delivery asset and should be regenerated from the original when requirements change.

How to choose a nearby target

Use the destination rule as the ceiling. Leaving a little margin can make the upload more predictable. If the system only recommends a size, test the smallest result that still preserves useful detail rather than forcing an arbitrary number.

Target size and dimensions are different

A target in bytes does not tell the browser how many pixels the image should contain. A 100 KB photo at 3000 pixels wide is a very different job from a 100 KB image at 900 pixels wide. That is why the result panel reports both dimensions and bytes.

Why strict targets behave differently

Simple graphics often compress much more easily than detailed photographs. Texture, film grain, foliage, hair and small text can all resist aggressive size reduction. If the target is very small, the correct answer may be to reduce dimensions first or ask the destination for a larger limit instead of producing a visibly damaged image.

A practical example

Suppose an application accepts files up to a stated limit. The safest approach is to create a copy that sits below that limit, not exactly on the line. The user can check the final byte count and dimensions before uploading. If the first result is too soft, increase the target or reduce dimensions less aggressively.

What to do when the browser cannot hit the target

Try a format the browser can encode, make the dimensions smaller, or accept a nearby file size when the destination allows it. Kayefi reports the actual result so the decision stays visible. It does not label an over-limit file as a success.

The purpose of a target-size page is to help complete a real task. A 97 KB image is not automatically better than a 103 KB image when the destination accepts both and the smaller version visibly loses important detail.

Keep the visual standard explicit. A target that cannot be reached without obvious artifacts may indicate that the destination requirement needs clarification or that the image needs a smaller display dimension.
