How to Compress an Image Without Losing Too Much Quality
Image compression is one of those jobs that sounds simple until a picture comes out looking soft, blocky or strangely washed out. The goal is not to make a file as small as possible. The useful goal is to remove unnecessary weight while keeping the image good enough for the person who will actually see it.
That distinction matters. A product photo on an online store, a hero image on a website and a tiny profile picture all have different needs. A 4,000-pixel camera image does not need the same treatment as a 600-pixel thumbnail.
Start with the dimensions, not just the quality slider
Large dimensions are often the biggest source of avoidable file size. A photo that is 5,000 pixels wide may be beautifully detailed, but if the page only displays it at 1,200 pixels, much of that information is never visible to the visitor.

Choose the format for the job
JPEG remains practical for photographs because it is designed around continuous-tone images. PNG is useful when transparency or crisp graphic edges matter. WebP is a strong general-purpose web format because it can handle photographs and many graphics while often producing a smaller file than older formats.
That does not mean WebP should replace every file automatically. A logo that requires transparent background may be better served by a format and export setting that preserves its edges. The right comparison is the actual image in front of you, not a blanket rule.
Use quality as a controlled trade-off
Lossy compression works by discarding information that is considered less important to visual reproduction. Push the quality setting too far and you will eventually notice ringing around text, blocky textures, muddy shadows or loss of fine detail.
A better workflow is to make a moderate reduction, preview the result at the size people will see, and then decide if another step is necessary. A compressed file that saves 80 percent but looks obviously damaged is often a worse result than one that saves 65 percent and still looks clean.
When a target file size matters
Sometimes the problem is not “make it smaller” but “get below this upload limit.” That is where a target-size compressor is more useful than a normal quality slider. What if the image still will not get small enough?

Small details that prevent a failed upload
Check the filename, file type and finished size before you submit the image. If a portal gives you a maximum rather than a target, leave a little headroom when practical instead of trying to land exactly on the boundary. A file that is 101KB can be rejected by a 100KB limit even though the difference is trivial to a person.
Make the smaller copy, keep the original
One of the safest habits in image work is to treat the compressed file as a delivery copy. Do not overwrite the original camera or source file. That way you can create another version later for a different service with a different limit.
When the result is still too large
Go back to the source and change one variable at a time. Reduce dimensions, choose another suitable format or adjust compression. Changing everything at once makes it difficult to understand what actually improved the result and can make quality worse than necessary.
Check the result before you submit
A successful download does not mean the image will automatically pass the destination’s rules. Open the output, check its file extension, verify its actual byte size and make sure it still shows what the recipient needs to see. A thirty-second check can save another round of rejected uploads.
It is also worth remembering that different services can impose different limits. Do not create one tiny version and use it everywhere. Keep a good source and make the delivery copy for the specific destination.
A note about quality and file size
There is a temptation to chase a particular compression percentage because it looks impressive in a tool result. That number is only useful when the output still does what you need. A 90 percent reduction is not a success if a document becomes unreadable or a photograph loses the detail that identifies the subject.
For that reason, compare the before and after files in context. Look at the image on the phone or page where it will actually be used. If it remains clear and the file meets the technical requirement, you have reached a practical result. There is no prize for pushing the file smaller once the useful work is done.
