JPG vs WebP: Which Image Format Is Better for a Website?

JPG and WebP solve similar problems, but they were designed in different eras of the web. JPG is familiar, widely supported and still perfectly useful. WebP was created with modern web delivery in mind and can often produce a smaller image at a comparable visual quality.

When JPG still makes sense

JPG is a practical choice for photographs, especially when compatibility with older software or workflows matters. It is also convenient when you are handing files to people who expect a traditional camera-image format.

If your image already looks good and is already small enough for the page, converting it just because another format exists may not produce a meaningful improvement.

Why websites often benefit from WebP

WebP is designed for efficient web images and supports both lossy and lossless compression, as well as transparency. In a modern site workflow, that makes it a useful default candidate for many images.

The important word is “candidate.” You still want to test the actual file. A format decision should be based on the image’s content, required features and delivery environment.

What happens to transparency?

Traditional JPG does not support transparency. If your graphic needs an alpha channel, JPG is not the right format. WebP can handle transparent images, which makes it useful for logos, interface graphics and other designs where a background must show through.

Quality is more important than the extension

Changing `.jpg` to `.webp` does not magically make an image better. The image has to be encoded into the new format. Compare the output at the size the visitor will see, not simply at 400 percent zoom.

A simple rule

Use the format that gives you the required visual result at a sensible file size and works in the context where the image will be used. For most modern websites, that means WebP deserves a place in your workflow, not that JPG suddenly became useless.

How to decide for a real page

Take the image you actually plan to publish and make two or three versions. Keep the dimensions the same, compare file sizes, then look at the places where compression is most likely to be visible. Photographs deserve attention around faces, hair and textured surfaces. Graphics deserve attention around thin lines, text and transparent edges. This simple comparison is more useful than choosing a format because it is currently fashionable.

Do not turn format choice into a rule you can never break

A good publishing system leaves room for exceptions. A site can use WebP for most photographs and still keep selected PNG assets. A JPG can remain perfectly reasonable when a downstream system expects it. A modern format is useful because it solves a real delivery problem, not because every older format is suddenly wrong.

  2. Check the current pixel dimensions.
  3. Compare at least two sensible formats.

What matters more than the label

People sometimes treat image formats as a contest where one format must always win. Real sites are messier. A note about quality and file size

There is a temptation to chase a particular compression percentage because it looks impressive in a tool result. That number is only useful when the output still does what you need. A 90 percent reduction is not a success if a document becomes unreadable or a photograph loses the detail that identifies the subject.

For that reason, compare the before and after files in context. Look at the image on the phone or page where it will actually be used. If it remains clear and the file meets the technical requirement, you have reached a practical result. There is no prize for pushing the file smaller once the useful work is done.

Keep a good original. Identify the destination. Check its requirements. Fix dimensions first when they are excessive. Choose a suitable format. Compress the delivery copy.
