Doing each file separately gets old very quickly.

Need to reduce the file size of a whole group of images?

Add the files to the queue and choose compression. You can apply the same quality setting across the batch instead of opening every photograph and changing the settings one by one.

This can be useful when you’re preparing images for a website, email attachments, online applications, ecommerce listings or a collection of files that needs to fit within a smaller storage or upload limit.

Resize Multiple Images at Once

A folder full of images does not need to be resized individually.

Bulk Image Tools can apply a shared resizing rule to the images in your queue. You can work with image dimensions and scale the files for a more consistent set.

This is particularly useful for website images, product catalogues, blog graphics, screenshots and photo collections where the original files are much larger than they need to be.

Reducing the dimensions of an image can also help reduce its file size, although resizing and compression are not the same thing. A smaller image can still be heavily compressed, and a large image can sometimes remain surprisingly large even after modest compression.

Convert a Batch of Images to Another Format

Sometimes the problem is not the dimensions. It is the format.

You may have a folder full of JPG images that you want to convert to WebP for a website, PNG files that need to become JPGs, or WebP images that need to be provided in a more familiar format for another application.

Instead of converting every image separately, add the whole batch and choose the output format.

Remember that changing formats does not automatically mean the resulting files will be smaller. The final file size depends on the image itself, the output format and the quality settings used during encoding.

For that reason, it is often better to process a few very large files at a time rather than assuming that a browser can comfortably handle an enormous queue.

Reducing the dimensions first can remove that unnecessary data. Compression can then reduce the remaining file further.

When You Should Not Use a Bulk Setting

Batch processing saves time because the same rules can be applied to many files. That is also its main limitation.

A shared setting is not always ideal for a collection containing very different images.

For example, a simple graphic with large areas of flat colour may respond differently to compression than a detailed photograph. An image with transparent areas may need a different output format from an ordinary photo.

When the files are very different from one another, inspect the results before replacing your originals.
