In a remarkable display of culinary prowess, renowned Nigerian chef Hilda Effiong Bassey, popularly known as Chef Hilda Baci, has set her sights on surpassing the current Guinness World Record holder. With her extraordinary feat, Baci is on the verge of breaking the record for the “longest cooking marathon by an individual,” having already reached the impressive milestone of 87 hours and 50 minutes.
The epic cooking marathon commenced on a Thursday afternoon when Chef Hilda Baci turned on her cooker at 4 pm, and by Monday morning, she had exceeded the current world record holder’s mark. Lata Tondon, an Indian chef, achieved the feat in 2019 with an uninterrupted cooking marathon lasting 87 hours and 45 minutes. However, if certified by the Guinness World Record, Baci will emerge as the new reigning champion, toppling Tondon’s record.
The venue for this extraordinary culinary endeavor is none other than the magnificent Amore Gardens in Lekki, Lagos State, where Baci’s marathon cooking session is currently in progress. Despite adverse weather conditions, Nigerians, including numerous celebrities, have defied the rain to physically cheer on the visibly fatigued chef. On Monday morning, Baci proudly marked the four-day milestone, a testament to her unwavering determination.
It is worth noting that Baci has already made her mark in the culinary world by emerging as the winner of the inaugural edition of the Jollof Face-off Competition in 2021, securing a grand prize of $5000. This latest endeavor serves as a testament to her relentless pursuit of culinary excellence and her desire to push the boundaries of what can be achieved in the kitchen.
The Guinness Book of Records, an esteemed reference book containing an extensive collection of human and natural world records, has been an authoritative source since its first publication in 1955 by the Guinness Brewery in Ireland. Over the years, it has evolved into one of the most widely recognized and frequently consulted reference books worldwide.
For an individual or group to be officially recognized by the Guinness World Records, they must submit substantial evidence and undergo a meticulous verification process. The achievement of a world record listing is a momentous accomplishment, and Nigerians have demonstrated their remarkable abilities in various fields. The PUNCH has previously highlighted several Nigerians who have broken Guinness World Records in recent times, showcasing their exceptional talents and determination.
As Chef Hilda Baci continues her unprecedented cooking marathon, capturing the attention and support of her compatriots, the anticipation and excitement surrounding the outcome are palpable. If she successfully shatters the existing Guinness World Record, it will undoubtedly be a moment of immense pride for Nigeria and a testament to the remarkable skill and passion displayed by this extraordinary chef.
