Key Highlights:

  • Tragic Ambush and Heroic Sacrifice: The Defence Headquarters revealed the heart-wrenching toll inflicted by a brutal ambush on their ranks. Three officers, 22 soldiers, and two pilots and crew members tragically lost their lives. This heart-rending loss was compounded by the injury of seven others during the fierce engagement with insurgents in Niger State’s Shiroro region.
  • Air Force’s Grim Mission: Responding to the dire situation, an Air Force aircraft was dispatched to evacuate the fallen soldiers and those injured, numbering 17. Tragically, the evacuation mission was marred by an unforeseen tragedy as the aircraft crashed. Clarifying the circumstances surrounding the crash, Major General Edward Buba, the Director of Defence Media Operations (DDMO), emphasized that the aircraft was not shot down but had suffered an as-yet-unknown cause for its demise. Additionally, he reported that 28 terrorists were neutralized during the intense confrontation.
  • Resolute Vow and Continuing Operations: The Defence Headquarters did not mince words in their resolve to confront the assailants with overwhelming force. Gen. Buba issued a stern warning that the military’s response to any group threatening the nation’s peace would be swift and potent. He reiterated the unswerving commitment of the armed forces to hunt down those who aimed to harm the country’s citizens. Notably, he mentioned the ongoing operations that yielded significant successes, including the neutralization of terrorists, arrests, and the confiscation of weapons and illicit goods.
