Jigawa State Tops 2022 Sub-National Citizens’ Budget Transparency Survey
The Socio-economic Research and Development Centre’s Executive Director, Tijjani Abdulkareem, revealed that Jigawa State has once again secured the top position in the 2022 sub-national citizens’ budget transparency survey. The state’s remarkable performance underscores its commitment to transparency, accountability, and involving citizens in the budget process.
CSOs and Government Collaborate to Enhance Budget Transparency
Following the adoption of recommendations and reports by Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in 2015, states across Nigeria have been actively working with CSOs to improve budget transparency. As a result, states now produce citizens’ budgets annually, ensuring public access to budget information, budget process details, and information about the audit and public procurement processes.
Commendation for Jigawa State’s Leadership in Citizen Inclusion
The Executive Director lauded the immediate past government of Jigawa State for its exemplary leadership in incorporating the public into the budget process and making budget information available online. This initiative has contributed to Jigawa’s consistent top-ranking performance in the National chart index. Additionally, other states in the North-West region, such as Kano, have shown significant progress in budget transparency due to their adoption of citizen involvement in budget processes.
