Nationwide Strike Scheduled
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has finalized preparations for a nationwide strike set to commence on August 2, 2023, in response to the lingering effects of subsidy removal, causing untold hardship for Nigerians. Despite a court order in June preventing the strike, the NLC remains determined to take action.
Government-Labour Dialogue Stalls
The Tinubu administration took the organised labour to court earlier in June to halt a planned nationwide strike following the initial removal of the subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit (petrol). Although a committee was established to engage with the NLC, officials from the Trade Union Congress and NLC have expressed frustration, claiming that the committee failed to conduct meaningful dialogues.
Ultimatum Issued to the Government
The NLC issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, demanding the conclusion of all negotiations with labour. Failure to meet the ultimatum would result in the commencement of the nationwide strike, further impacting various sectors of the country.
