Remove a Background From an Image
Upload your JPG, PNG, WebP or GIF image and the tool will load it directly in the browser.
Once the image appears, you can click the background area you want to remove. Kayefi uses the selected color as the reference and compares it with the surrounding pixels.
Pixels that fall within the selected tolerance are made transparent.
This works especially well when the background is a fairly consistent color, such as a white studio background, a simple solid backdrop or another area that is visually close to one shade.
Click the Background You Want to Remove
Sometimes the background is obvious.
In that case, simply click on it.
Kayefi samples the color at the point you select and uses that color for the removal process. You can then adjust the tolerance if some of the background remains or too much of the image is being removed.
This gives you more control than simply choosing “remove background” and hoping the result works.
For example, if a product is photographed against a light background, you can click an area of that background and adjust the tolerance until the unwanted area disappears while the product remains intact.
Let the Tool Detect the Background
You don’t always have to pick the color yourself.
Kayefi has an Auto Detect option that samples the four corners of the image and calculates an average background color from them. It then uses that color as the starting point for the removal process.
This can be convenient for images with a relatively even background.
It is only a starting point, though. If the corners contain different colors, shadows or parts of the subject, you may get a better result by clicking the background manually.
Adjust the Tolerance
The tolerance control is one of the most useful parts of the tool.
A low tolerance removes pixels that are very close to the selected background color.
A higher tolerance removes a wider range of similar shades.
That means the right setting depends on your image.
If some of the background is still visible, increasing the tolerance may help.
If parts of the subject start disappearing, reduce the tolerance.
The goal is not to set the tolerance as high as possible. It is to find the point where the unwanted background is removed without taking away useful parts of the image.
A Good Fit for Simple Backgrounds
This type of background removal works best when the background is relatively consistent.
Good examples include:
- White product backgrounds
- Plain studio backgrounds
- Solid-color graphics
- Simple logos
- Basic screenshots
- Images with a clearly separated backdrop
It can be less effective when the background contains many colors, strong shadows, reflections, gradients or areas that look very similar to the subject.
That is not a failure of the interface. It is simply a limitation of color-based background removal.
Why Some Images Are Harder
Imagine a person wearing a white shirt photographed against a white wall.
The tool sees very similar colors in both the subject and the background.
If you increase the tolerance enough to remove all of the wall, parts of the shirt may also become transparent.
The same problem can happen with products that have reflective surfaces, light-colored objects on pale backgrounds or photographs with heavy shadows.
When that happens, click a more representative area of the background and reduce the tolerance until the subject is protected.
What Happens to the Removed Background?
The matching pixels are given an alpha value of zero, which makes them transparent. The cleaned result can then be downloaded as a PNG.
This is useful when you want to place the image on a different background later.
For example, you could take a product photo with its original plain backdrop, remove that backdrop, and place the product on a new website or marketing background.
Why PNG?
PNG is a sensible output for a transparent image because it supports transparency.
The tool therefore downloads the result as:
PNG
rather than trying to force a transparent result into a format that does not handle transparency in the same way.
If you later need a JPG version, you can place the cleaned image against a background and use Kayefi’s Image Converter or another suitable image workflow.
Use It for Product Images
A common use is cleaning up simple product photographs.
Suppose you have an item photographed against a white background and you want the product separated from that background.
Upload the image, click the background, adjust the tolerance and inspect the result.
If the background is fairly uniform, this can be a quick way to prepare the image for a product card, catalogue, presentation or simple promotional graphic.

Use It for Logos and Simple Graphics
Logos with a solid background can also be good candidates.
For example, if a logo sits on a solid white backdrop, removing the white area can produce a transparent PNG that is easier to place on another design.
The result depends on the image itself. Fine details, shadows and anti-aliased edges can contain colors close to the background and may require a more careful tolerance setting.
Use It for Screenshots and Simple Graphics
Background removal is not limited to photographs.
A simple graphic or screenshot with a clearly defined background can also work well.
Click the area you want to remove and watch how the transparency changes.
If the image contains many unrelated colors, however, a color-based remover may not be the right tool for the job.
Your Original Image Is Not Overwritten
Kayefi works on a copy of the image data in the browser.
The original file remains available to you, while the processed result is prepared separately for download.
That makes it safe to experiment with different tolerance settings.
You can reset the image and try again instead of having to start over from the original file each time.
How to Remove an Image Background
1. Choose your image
Select a supported image or drag it into the upload area.
2. Let Kayefi detect the background or choose it yourself

3. Adjust the tolerance
Move the tolerance slider until the unwanted background disappears without removing important parts of the subject.
4. Check the result
Look carefully around edges, especially where the subject and background have similar colors.
5. Reset and refine when necessary
You can reset the image and try a different background color or tolerance.
6. Download the PNG
When the result looks right, download the transparent PNG.
Background Removal vs Cropping
These are completely different jobs.
Cropping removes part of the image based on its position.
Background removal removes pixels based on their similarity to a selected color.
For example, cropping can remove everything outside a square area, but it cannot separate a product from the background inside that area.
Kayefi’s Image Cropper is better when you simply need to change the framing.
Background Removal vs Compression
Removing a background does not automatically make an image smaller.
It changes which pixels are visible and can introduce transparency, but the resulting PNG may still be a relatively large file.
If the cleaned image needs to be smaller for a website or upload, use Kayefi’s Compress Image afterward.
That gives you a practical workflow:
Remove background → resize if needed → compress → upload
When This Tool May Not Be the Right Choice
Color-based removal has a clear strength: it is simple, fast and useful for images with a reasonably consistent background.
It is not a replacement for advanced subject-segmentation software in every situation.
Images with:
- Hair against a similar background
- Smoke
- Glass
- Complex shadows
- Reflections
- Fine fur
- Multiple background colors
- Subjects that share the background color
may require more detailed editing.
The best result comes from choosing the right tool for the image instead of expecting one method to work perfectly on everything.
