Less than a month in Aso Rock, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has axed the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
The Director of Information, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation Willie Bassey disclosed this in a statement in the late hours of Friday.
According to the statement, Mr Godwin Emefiele must vacate from office with immediate effect.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has suspended the Central Bank Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, CFR, from office with immediate effect,” stated Bassey.
“This is sequel to the ongoing investigation of his office and the planned reforms in the financial sector of the economy.”
According to Bassey, the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate), who will serve as the Central Bank Governor till the investigation and reforms are complete, should be given control of Mr Emefiele’s affairs.
President Tinubu had earlier announced that the Nigerian monetary policy requires thorough and this could be a step in that direction.
