Code 128 is widely used for logistics labels, internal product IDs, shipping references, asset tags, and warehouse workflows because it can represent a broad set of ASCII characters in a compact symbol. This browser tool creates a barcode image and allows PNG or JPEG export.
Code 128 output from this page uses Code Set B for printable ASCII data. If a downstream system requires a specific GS1 application identifier layout, check the relevant specification rather than treating an ordinary Code 128 label as GS1-128 by default.
How to use this tool
- Enter the identifier exactly as used in your system.
- Generate and inspect the bars and readable text.
- Scan with the target scanner and export the image.
Practical guidance
Code 128 is a compact linear barcode that supports the printable ASCII values accepted by this generator, making it useful for internal inventory, shipping references, and operational labels when the receiving system expects Code 128. It does not itself assign a product number. Confirm the data format and scanner configuration before selecting it for a retail or warehouse workflow.
Checks before you use the output
Use a high-contrast print with sufficient bar height and clear blank space at both sides. Long input strings can create wide symbols, so avoid shrinking them to fit a tiny label. Test the image with the same scanner type used in operation, and preserve the exact source text including leading zeroes because they may be meaningful in your system.
Questions and answers
Can Code 128 encode letters and digits?
Yes. This implementation supports printable ASCII characters in its Code B mode.
Is every Code 128 symbol a GS1-128 symbol?
No. GS1-128 has additional application-identifier and separator conventions that require correct data formatting.
Can Code 128 encode letters and numbers?
Yes. This generator supports printable ASCII characters, which includes standard English letters, digits, and common punctuation. Non-ASCII characters are not supported in this version.
