Code 93 stores a full ASCII-friendly payload in less width than Code 39. Use it when a label specification names Code 93 specifically.
Do not substitute it for Code 39 or Code 128 unless the scanner profile includes Code 93.

How is it different from Code 39?
It is denser and can carry a wider character set. The scanner must support it.
Is it a retail barcode?
Not by itself. Retail items normally use EAN or UPC.
What if the scan returns nothing?
Enable Code 93 on the scanner, then reprint with more bar height if the label is tiny.
