EAN-13 is the familiar 13-digit linear barcode used for many retail products outside North America as well as in international product identification. Enter a 12-digit body to calculate the check digit or provide all 13 digits for validation and rendering.

A barcode image is not a product registration and does not grant a valid GS1 company prefix. For real retail packaging, obtain identifiers through the appropriate GS1 organisation and make sure your item data follows the retailer’s requirements.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter 12 digits, or all 13 when the check digit is already known.
  2. Generate the barcode and review the validation result.
  3. Check scanner readability at the intended print dimensions.

Practical guidance

EAN-13 is commonly seen on retail products outside North America and is normally associated with a 13-digit GTIN. This generator can calculate a final check digit from 12 digits or verify a supplied 13-digit value before rendering the symbol. It does not determine if the number is officially allocated to your company or product.

Checks before you use the output

Use only an identifier assigned through the appropriate product-number process. Preserve leading zeroes and compare the human-readable digits with the product record. For commercial packaging, verify quiet zones, physical dimensions, bar height, print quality, and placement against the retailer or GS1 guidance that applies to your product category.

Questions and answers

Can I make up a random EAN-13 number for retail?

A valid check digit only confirms the arithmetic; it does not mean the number is legitimately assigned to your product.

What if my 13th digit is wrong?

The tool reports the mismatch so you can correct the number before printing.

Can I create a new retail product number here?

No. The generator renders a barcode and checks the arithmetic. Obtain the appropriate assigned identifier through the relevant product-number authority before using it commercially.
