Preparing tool…

Reading and generation stay in your browser. Check the result before you share, print, or open a link.

UPC-A is a familiar retail barcode for product scanning in North America. Enter the first 11 digits to calculate the check digit, or enter the full 12-digit number to validate it and produce a scannable image.

Do not confuse check-digit validity with official product-number assignment. Before using the barcode commercially, confirm the identifier was assigned to your product and that the retailer expects UPC-A. Avoid stretching the image horizontally or trimming its quiet zones.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter 11 or 12 digits.
  2. Generate the UPC-A symbol and inspect the check digit status.
  3. Scan the code after exporting to make sure the printed width and height remain suitable.

Practical guidance

UPC-A is widely used on retail goods in North America and is generally based on a 12-digit identifier. This generator accepts the 11-digit body or a full 12-digit value, adds or checks the final checksum digit, and renders a symbol suitable for preview and testing. The tool cannot issue an authorised product identifier.

Checks before you use the output

Before artwork is final, compare the number with the product database and confirm how the intended scanner expects the code. UPC-A symbols have placement and print-size requirements, and an image that looks correct on screen can fail on a small or low-quality label. Keep the quiet zones clear and validate a production sample.

Questions and answers

Can UPC-A be converted to EAN-13?

UPC-A data is often represented as EAN-13 with a leading zero, but use the format required by your target system.

Does a valid check digit prove the code is registered?

No. It only proves that the checksum follows the format’s arithmetic.

Will any valid UPC-A number identify my product?

No. A valid check digit only confirms the arithmetic. Product identity and official assignment are separate, so use an identifier authorised for that product.
