Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has commended Governor Umaru Fintiri’s re-election in Adamawa State, describing it as a triumph for democracy.

Key highlights

Here are three key highlights from the news:

  • The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Aisha ‘Binani’ Dahiru, was initially declared the winner by an official of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) even before the supplementary exercise’s results were collated. However, the Commission nullified the move following the conclusion of the rescheduled collation.
  • Fintiri, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, was declared the winner of the highly-dramatic poll on Tuesday, beating his closest rival ‘Binani’.
  • Atiku, who was the PDP presidential candidate for the 2023 elections, expressed optimism about winning at the presidential election tribunal, where he is challenging Bola Tinubu’s emergence as Nigeria’s leader. “By the way, it is not yet uhuru as we still have one more major mandate to reclaim, and together as ONE, we shall accomplish the task for the good of our country and its people,” he said.

In his congratulatory message, Atiku lauded the people of Adamawa and individuals of goodwill for resisting the anti-democratic forces that aimed to hijack and undermine the people’s mandate. He added that Nigerians need to be vigilant to avoid yielding to these forces in future elections.
